Make Your Own Oat Milk

We’ve all run out of milk when the cereal bowl is only half full, the recipe is almost complete, or the coffee has already been poured. Running to the store just for milk isn’t always an option, and is always a bother. With this amazingly easy recipe, you’ll never run out of milk again. You won’t believe how easy and fun (and inexpensive) it is to make your own oat milk.

Yield: 6 cups

Total Time: 10 Minutes

Ingredients

1 cup oats – regular, rolled, or sprouted. Organic is best.
6 cups ice cold water

Directions

Place your oats and ice cold water in a blender and blend for no more than 30 – 40 seconds on high. Over blending will result in a less than desirable, almost slimy texture.

Make sure your water is ice cold. Using room temperature or warm water will begin to cook the oats and, again, result in a slimy texture.

Once done blending, strain the oat milk through a cheesecloth or thin tea towel. Allow all the milk to drain, but do not squeeze the oats. Squeezing the oats will release bits of the oats into the milk and result in that dreaded slimy texture.

Once you have strained the oats once, repeat the process with a clean piece of cheesecloth or tea towel.

Ideally, you want to store your oat milk in a sealable glass jar and refrigerate. The milk should stay fresh in your refrigerator for 5 days in a sealed glass jar.

Want to sweeten things up? Consider adding 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, a teaspoon of cinnamon, a whole date, or honey to taste before blending.
